The Real Business of Human Resources

Having worked with companies who reach out to HR professionals, I'm fully aware that there's a lot more to HR than the "feel-good" moments we all think are the highlight of these professional's day. I've watched even the most charismatic HR people fall prey to the thankless task of deciding benefit coverage, ending inter-office arguments and contributing to the ever-pressing layoff discussion. One of the most colorful and caring HR execs I've had the privilege of working with got to the point where she wore black almost every day she was so depressed. And believe me, black was not her style. Not by a long shot!

So as I wade through the blog posts and articles about HR analytics and how to get more work from less employees, I love coming across gems like two stories I read this week. They make me feel like we all have so much humanity to give, if we'd just cut out the red tape!

The first was from Jay Kuhns' blog post Heroes, Cancer and Humble Pie for an HR guy on his blog NoExcusesHR. Jay writes about a moving experience between NFL star Vincent Lecavalier, and his relationship with a young boy battling cancer. Get the tissues ready! Read the full story here.

And the second was about a grandfather trying to get a flight in time to be there when his grandson was taken off of life support. He thinks he missed his flight, until he gets to the gate and learns the Southwest pilot has held the plane for him. The lift off was nine minutes late, and a thousands pounds off of the grandfather's shoulders. You can read the article here.

Sometimes it's not about spreadsheets, analytics, SaaS or retention. It's about a one-to-one connection between two human beings trying to help one another. You gotta LOVE HR!
